No Rain

This is a cowboy poem that takes place on a ranch or farm out West where they’ve had a long and stubborn drought. It can be a hard life, and drought can take a man to the end of his soul. This poem is proof of it. While very short — I consider it one of my best poems.

It’s been several weeks
without no rain
the ‘crick is dry
life aien’t the same

another calf died
weak with thirst
I had to cry
my heart could burst

there’s none but dust
around us here
we can hardly live
and that’s in fear

oh why, oh Lord
are things so poor
my crops all withered
there’s nothing more

I’ve prayed each day
to have some rain
but at the end
it never came

and I’m about
to lose my land . . .
and don’t know what
to do
