Sound Cannons

President Obama in June or July of 2014 signed an executive order allowing the use of sound cannons off the Florida coast to search for oil. These cannons send blasts of highly amplified sounds on a continuous basis with such force that whales, dolphins, and other creatures are severely injured or killed because of it.

Think of a motorcycle revving up in your living room 24 hours a day, multiply that by ten, and you have a rough idea what it will do to sea life. Are we so morally bereft that our need for oil can justify such terrible damage to creatures who do us no harm? That is the question this poem asks. What will you do?

Is there no advocate
for the creatures of the sea?
While we blast sonic canons
wherever they be?

Off the Florida coast
more oil we seek
no pity for the dolphins
we kill or make weak

Is this what it’s come to?
When we do not care?
Except for the money
the oil will bear?

For we gobble the earth
we despoil the land
our search for more oil
has got out of hand

And whales who are swimming
will cry out in pain
as the dolphins will likewise
have their hearing go lame

And they’ll die by the hundreds
as they wash up on shore
and will soon disappear
forever and more

Is there no pity?
Have we no shame?
Will none of us step up?
Are we morally lame?

For, when men turn their backs
On what all men can see
then God shall call Judgment
on both you and me
