The Storm

The Storm is a fantasy poem that is both a visualization and a dream sequence. The unrelenting anger of the storm pushes against the man, who only seeks shelter from it, and finally finding a small alcove, finds his escape by the only means available — exhaustion and sleep.  Sleep —  the great healer.

The rain pounds against the pavement
the periodic roar of the thunder startles me
I am caught alone on an empty street
that goes on forever

angry clouds blacken above me as
lightening streaks ever closer

No door do I see
No window casts a glow
the rain sweeps across the empty street towards me
in vast oncoming, blinding sheets
pushing me almost backwards
against its unrelenting force
as the wind increases almost to a howl

Where are the people?

I look for a barrier
a wall or enclosure to rest against
something
anything to stop the pounding
the stinging
the unrelenting, unending force of the wind and rain

A lightening bolt streaks across the sky
fragmenting itself into a hundred different fingers of illumination
brief
so brief
but enough to spot the shelter I seek – if only a wall

I stagger behind it
while the rain
relentless in its anger at my somewhat escape
continues to drench me from above

And I huddle and sink into a ball
waiting
waiting for it to finally pass over
as I fall deeply asleep
despite myself
no longer able
to keep the waves of fatigue
at bay
any longer

Sleep
the ultimate escape
from
it all
